At Gibson, we have never been ones to sit back and wait for things to happen. Curiosity is what drives us. It lives in our blood, our barrels and our vineyard soil.
So when something exciting comes along, like the very first International Fiano Day on October 17, you can be sure we are part of it from day one.
Because for us, Fiano is not new news. It has been part of our Discovery Road journey for years, a variety we fell for early, long before it became the talk of the wine world.
Our Road to Fiano
Our Discovery Road range is all about exploration. It is where we get to stretch our winemaking legs, try something different and uncover flavours that thrive in the Barossa.
Fiano caught our attention for all the right reasons. It is a white grape from Italy’s Campania region, the same ancient hills that produced the legendary Roman wine Apianum, or “the wine of the bees.” And just like those bees, we were drawn to it straight away.
We first made Fiano in 2015 using fruit from the Riverland, intrigued by its ability to stay bright and balanced in warm conditions. Over the years it became clear that this variety had real promise for Australian vineyards.
Then in 2023, we reached a new milestone with our first Barossa grown Fiano, crafted from the Estate grown Isabelle vineyard. The wine showed exactly why Fiano belongs here, bright, fresh and beautifully aromatic, with notes of melon, grapefruit and pineapple carried by crisp acidity and a subtle mineral finish.
Why Fiano Belongs in Australia
If ever there was a grape made for Australian conditions, it is Fiano.
It is resilient in the vineyard and generous in the glass, thriving in warmth while holding on to its natural freshness. Its thick skins protect it from the sun and its naturally high acidity brings balance and life to every vintage.
It is no wonder this Mediterranean native has taken off here. Across the country, winemakers are realising what we already knew, that Fiano has all the hallmarks of a future classic.
Our 2025 Discovery Road Fiano
The latest release, our 2025 Discovery Road Fiano, continues the story.
Pale straw in colour, it opens with white lavender, jasmine and crisp orchard fruits. On the palate it is soft and silky, with flavours of custard apple, green papaya and poached pear. Lively acidity ties it all together, keeping things bright and refreshing.
It is vibrant, textural and effortlessly drinkable, a wine that feels like sunshine in a glass.
What to Eat with Fiano
Fiano is one of those rare wines that feels at home anywhere.
It pairs beautifully with creamy pasta, roast chicken or grilled seafood. But do not stop there, try it with spicy dishes, summer salads or even freshly shucked oysters. Its texture and freshness make it a true all rounder, lifting rich flavours and refreshing the palate.
If You Love… You Will Love Fiano
If you are a Sauvignon Blanc drinker who loves freshness but wants a touch more texture, Fiano is your match.
Fans of Pinot Grigio will recognise its pear and citrus charm, while lovers of unoaked Chardonnay or Semillon will appreciate its body and balance.
It is a wine that sits perfectly between brightness and depth, a sweet spot that more and more people are discovering each year.
Why We Are Celebrating
The first International Fiano Day is a chance to raise a glass to a grape that has found its place in Australia’s vineyards and on our tables.
For Gibson, it is also a moment to celebrate what we have always believed in, getting involved early, backing flavour and curiosity, and helping shape the story of new varieties in the Barossa. So here is to Fiano, to sunshine, generosity and that little spark of discovery that keeps us excited vintage after vintage.
We will drink to that.
