    Description

Wilfreda is our unique expression of a varietal blend made famous by the Côtes du Rhône region -Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Whilst Grenache tends to play dominant role in the wines of Southern France, our Barossa interpretation highlights Mataro as the lead figure.

Rob had come to know Wilfred and Freda Wilksch - a Barossan grape growing couple of staunch German-heritage - through his days at Penfolds. Their dry grown, 1970s planted block in Light Pass was loved so much by Rob, he bought it from Wilfred and Freda and named it after them.

For several years the ‘Wilfreda’ block was a constant in Gibson’s premium fruit sources, however Rob and family were compelled to sell it again in 1990s. This enabled the later purchase of the Burkes Hill Vineyard in the cooler Eden Valley.

Whilst we now have established alternative Mataro, Shiraz and Grenache resources, we continue to honour the Wilfreda vineyard and the Wilksch family through our current day bottling.

A wine with lifted aromas of musk, plums and forest floor are supported by nuances of wild thyme and dried flowers. The palate is deep and concentrated with flavours of blackberry, black cherry, red plum and subtle orange rind complexity.
