The Smithy

GibsonThe Smithy

2018 Shiraz Cabernet

Barossa, SA

Brambly Cabernet fruit characters and lavender meet a ‘deep growl’ from complex plum skin and mocha from Shiraz and oak.

From $39.00 per bottle

    Description

A tin-roofed, mud and straw-walled cottage sits at the centre of Gibson’s home property in Light Pass. It was the original home of the local Blacksmith and his family, thought to date to the 1850s. An artefact of the Barossa’s early European settlers, we know it simply as ‘The Smithy’.

This wine, like The Smithy cottage itself, is full of character and unassuming charm. The quintessential Australian blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon comes together seamlessly. Lifted, brambly Cabernet fruit characters and lavender meet a ‘deep growl’ from complex plum skin and mocha from Shiraz and oak.

    • Vintage Notes

Good average rain then a hot October and cool dry conditions through harvest. This, combined with low yields led to strong varietal expression in the reds. The 2018 season enjoyed good winter rain and a fine dry harvest period. A hot October was followed by average temperatures with a cool period in March. Good ripening and harvest conditions and hence good flavour development for concentrated Barossa reds.

    • Winemaking

Origin of Fruit: Barossa Shiraz 60%, Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon 40%

    • Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with crimson hue. Vibrant aromas of satsuma plum, blackberries and violets come together with nuances of dried herb and vanilla. The concentrated fruit flavours of spicy blackberries, boysenberry, vanilla and herbal notes integrate seamlessly to provide great balance, while the cedary oak provides mid-palate structure for a lingering finish.
